International schools and the discipline of international education both emerge deeper in the history of the 19th century than has been credited in the research literature. The closing decades of a global colonial period in the 1960s and the 1970s and the subsequent rise of an increasingly dynamic global system of capitalism in the 1980s and 1990s produced a gradual response in the aspirations of national systems of education in relation to those concurrent global movements.
