George Walker, who died on 4 March 2022 after a period of illness, was a truly remarkable man. Polymath, scientist, musician, teacher, leader, international educator, researcher, author, influencer, family man – these are just some of the many and varied epithets that have been used to describe George, whom many readers of the International Schools Journal will have encountered through his roles at the International School of Geneva or the International Baccalaureate. His contribution to the field of international education belies, however, the breadth of expertise and interests that suffused his life and his professional career. It has been said that George’s career divided into three main parts: science education, school leadership, and international education. In this short piece we will say a little about each before returning to the personal characteristics that led to him being so successful across them all.
