ISJ November 2018: Ambiguity, uncertainty and the ‘post-truth’ world – Implications for the IB Diploma Programme Theory of Knowledge Course

The IB Diploma Programme Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course is currently entering the final phase of a curriculum review, designing a new version of the course to be launched in 2020. Throughout the discussions there has been a sharp awareness that this review is taking place at a time when “the blurring of borders between truth and deception, truthfulness and dishonesty, and non-fiction and fiction has become a habit – and also an educational challenge” (Horsthemke, 2017, p273). While this challenge is clearly not a concern unique to TOK, it is of particular significance given the nature and aims of this course.
