ACS Athens president, Stefanos Gialamas, age 64, passed away in his sleep, October 18, 2019, prior to his keynote speech at the Alliance for International Education (AIE) Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. This event has been a tremendous loss to both the ACS Athens community and to international education at large.

President Gialamas came to ACS Athens in 2005 from higher education. He held a BS, MA and a Ph.D. in Mathematics; the latter was from the University of Illinois in Chicago in Knot theory. He had been a University Professor, Department Chair, Dean, and a Provost at higher education institutions in the United States and Greece. His professional work included research in Leadership, Faculty Development, Innovative Approaches in Teaching and Learning, Knot Theory, Mathematics and the Arts, the History and Philosophy of Mathematics, and Mathematics Education. He published and co-published more than 120 refereed articles in both English and Greek languages, four books, a book chapter, many manuals and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles.
