One of the most visible and influential figures on the international school stage for more than two decades prior to his retirement in 2004. T. Michael (“Mike”) Maybury died at age 81 on January 13, 2020. After several hospital stays, he passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family members, at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. A long-serving Executive Secretary of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), he led schools on three continents and made significant contributions to the development of the International Baccalaureate (IB). Mike Maybury was born in Liverpool on October 15, 1938. The eldest of four, he attended a primary school once headed by his mother, and her mother before her, so teaching was in his blood. After secondary school at St Edward’s College, Liverpool, he studied at St Mary’s College, Twickenham, and began his career teaching mathematics and PE. He completed a BSc degree in mathematics and computer science at Liverpool University before taking head of department and senior teacher roles nearby.
