There is no surprise that what happened to George Floyd or Breonna Taylor sparked outrage among the people who knew them and loved them; what may have been more surprising but long overdue was the rage and outpouring of demonstrations, conversations and confrontations that are happening in the United States and around the world. Some would say it was a wake-up call, others would maintain that these are voices in the wilderness that have been reaching out for equality for a very long time to no avail. In conversations between faculty among ourselves and with our students, represented almost solely by white faculty and graduate students, we are examining, responding, and challenging ourselves as white allies to step up.
