Lodewijk van Oord and Ken Corn

In this article we return to the eternal Why of education, exploring various purposes of education and subsequent international school mission statements. Analysing John Dewey’s statement that the moral responsibility of schools ‘and those who conduct it’ is first and foremost to society, we present a curriculum model that visualizes and articulates an enabling education for the greater good. This butterfly model stimulates students to gain a solid understanding of the complexities of the world and simultaneously teaches them how to act and contribute to the shaping of a better and fairer world.
