Abstract:

One way of looking at a lifetime’s career is to see it as a set of steps to Parnassus, progressing steadily – or by revelations – to the present exalted position. Another is to look at events, and to see how they have contributed towards the amalgam of experiences that one has accumulated up to that point. George Walker, Director-General of the International Baccalaureate from 1994 to 2006, and Director of the International School of Geneva from 1985 to 1994, has chosen the second.
